Why does Singapore need more BTU per m² than other countries?
Singapore's year-round tropical heat and humidity mean your aircon must work harder. We apply a 25% climate adjustment on top of the standard 500 BTU/m² formula — so a 20 m² room needs ~12,500 BTU, not 10,000.
What does HP mean for Singapore aircons?
HP (horsepower) is how most Singapore dealers rate aircons. 1 HP ≈ 9,000–10,000 BTU. A 1.5 HP unit handles most standard HDB bedrooms (about 150–160 sq ft / 14–15 m²). Our calculator tells you the BTU and we show the equivalent HP.
Should I upsize my aircon BTU for Singapore heat?
Yes, slightly — but not dramatically. Our calculator already includes the tropical adjustment. Oversizing causes short-cycling (the unit turns on and off too frequently), which wastes energy and wears out the compressor faster.
My room is west-facing — how does that affect BTU?
West-facing rooms get afternoon sun from 1–6pm, which adds significant heat load. Our calculator adds a 10% BTU buffer for full-sun / west-facing rooms to compensate.
