How Often Should You Service Your Aircon in Singapore?
Quarterly is the common answer. The honest answer depends on the room, the runtime, and whether the unit was chemically washed last year. Here's the cadence that actually works.
The lazy answer to “how often should I service my aircon” is “every 3 months.” It’s the lazy answer because it’s right most of the time but doesn’t explain why or when to deviate. Between quarterly services, an aircon chemical wash every 12–18 months handles the biofilm routine service can’t reach.
This guide gives you the actual cadence by room type, along with the signs that tell you to service earlier than the calendar says. If you’re not sure whether it’s time yet, also skim our signs your aircon needs servicing guide.
Why Singapore aircons need more frequent servicing
Three Singapore-specific factors shorten the time between services compared to temperate climates:
- Year-round high humidity (75–95% RH) keeps coils wet long enough for biofilm to grow continuously, not just in summer.
- High runtime (8–14 hours daily) for typical bedroom and living-room units, vs 2–4 hours in cooler climates.
- Outdoor pollution and dust loads in dense urban areas accumulate on outdoor condenser fins faster than rural climates.
The combined result is that a Singapore aircon accumulates roughly twice the dirt load per month compared to a similar unit in, say, Sydney or Melbourne.
Recommended cadence by room type
Bedrooms (8–10 hours/night)
Service every 3 months. Bedrooms are the highest-runtime rooms in most Singapore homes. The blower runs through 8+ hours of overnight use, the filter clogs faster, and the high overnight humidity keeps the coil wet for longer stretches.
Add a chemical wash every 12–18 months on bedroom units to flush the deeper biofilm that routine servicing can’t reach.
Living rooms (4–8 hours/day)
Service every 3 months for daily use, every 4–6 months for weekend use only. Living-room units run during dinner and TV hours but aren’t on overnight in most Singapore homes, so they accumulate dirt slightly slower than bedrooms.
Study or home office (variable)
Service every 3–4 months if used for work-from-home. A home office unit running 6–8 hours weekdays should follow the bedroom cadence. A study unit used a few hours a week can stretch to 6 months.
Rental units (multi-tenant, heavy use)
Service every 6 weeks. Tenant-occupied homes typically run aircons 12–14 hours daily and tenant turnover means new occupants don’t always know to clean filters. We recommend 6-week intervals via our maintenance contracts to landlords.
Small office / commercial (8am–7pm, 5–6 days)
Service every 6–8 weeks. Commercial use loads the units harder than residential and the cooling demand is less forgiving — a partly clogged unit affects productivity directly.
Signs you should service earlier than scheduled
Even on a quarterly schedule, certain symptoms mean you should book sooner:
- The cooling has visibly weakened — slower to reach setpoint than usual
- Your last SP Group bill is noticeably higher with the same usage pattern
- A musty smell on first switch-on after a few hours off
- Visible dust streaks around the louvre vanes
- Water dripping from the front of the indoor unit
- Ice forming on the copper pipe outside
Any one of these is enough to bring the next service forward by 2–4 weeks.
Why skipping servicing raises your SP Group bill
A dirty filter and biofilm-coated coil reduce heat transfer efficiency by 10–25% over a 6–9 month neglect period. To deliver the same cooling, the compressor runs longer and the blower spins at higher fan settings — both of which use more electricity.
For a typical 4-room HDB flat with 4 fan coils running 8 hours daily, the difference between a quarterly-serviced and a yearly-serviced setup is roughly S$15–S$30 per month on the SP Group bill. Over a year, that’s S$180–S$360 — more than the cost of two quarterly services.
In other words: routine servicing usually pays for itself through electricity savings alone, before you factor in equipment longevity.
